What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a medical metric used to evaluate if an individual has a healthy body composition relative to their height. Adopted globally by agencies like the World Health Organization (WHO), BMI is a quick, inexpensive screening tool used to identify potential weight-related issues and health risks.
BMI Calculation Formula
The standard metric formula for calculating Body Mass Index is:
• Weight: Mass in kilograms
• Height: Height in meters squared (cm divided by 100)
BMI Calculation Example
If an adult weighs 70 kg and is 170 cm tall (1.70 meters):
- Height squared = 1.70 × 1.70 = 2.89 m²
- BMI = 70 / 2.89 = 24.22
- This person has a BMI of 24.2, which falls within the Normal Weight range.
Standard Body Mass Index Categories
The WHO classifies adults over 20 years old into four main weight ranges:
| BMI Range | Weight Classification | Potential Health Risks |
|---|---|---|
| < 18.5 | Underweight | Nutritional deficiencies, weakened immunity |
| 18.5 - 24.9 | Normal Weight | Low risk for cardiovascular issues |
| 25.0 - 29.9 | Overweight | Increased risk for hypertension and diabetes |
| ≥ 30.0 | Obese | High risk for coronary heart disease, stroke |
Important Limitations of Body Mass Index
While BMI is highly useful for general populations, it does have key medical limitations:
- Muscle vs Fat: BMI cannot distinguish between muscle weight and fat weight. Athletes or bodybuilders may register as 'overweight' due to pure muscle mass.
- Body Fat Distribution: It does not evaluate where fat is stored (e.g. visceral belly fat, which is riskier than subcutaneous fat).
- Age & Gender: Older adults naturally lose muscle and retain fat, which BMI might underestimate. Women typically have more body fat than men at the same BMI.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measurement of a person's weight relative to their height. It is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters. It serves as a general screening tool to identify possible weight problems for adults.
What are the standard BMI categories?
For adults 20 years and older, BMI is categorized as follows: Underweight: BMI is less than 18.5 | Normal Weight: BMI is 18.5 to 24.9 | Overweight: BMI is 25.0 to 29.9 | Obese: BMI is 30.0 or higher.
Is BMI a perfect measure of body fat?
No, BMI is an indirect estimate and does not measure body fat directly. It cannot distinguish between fat and muscle mass. For example, athletes or bodybuilders with high muscle mass might have a high 'Overweight' or 'Obese' BMI despite having low body fat.
